Mousheerl Maharaulee: An Outstanding Student
02 September 2010

In four years, Mousheerl Maharaulee completed the Foundation Programme, a Curtin's B Com degree in Accounting and Finance as well as a B Sc in Mathematical and Statistical Science (Financial Modelling Stream) from UNISA
From time to time, a faculty member brings to the attention of Chronicles the performance of one of its outstanding students. This time, we focus on Mousheerl Maharaulee who started his academic career with CTI's Foundation Programme when he was only 15. During the next four years, he completed not only the Foundation Programme, but Curtin's B Com degree in Accounting and Finance as well as a B Sc in Mathematical and Statistical Science (Financial Modelling Stream) from UNISA!
You started with CTI Foundation Programme. Why not enroll directly on the B Com?
My academic path has been rather unusual. As a Form 4 student of the Royal College Curepipe, I sat for the GCE O Level. My aggregate result of 13 qualified me for Lower 6. Unfortunately, this was disallowed by the Mauritian authorities on the basis that I had sat for my O-Level privately. I had no option but to do my A-Levels privately.
I then found out that CTI was the only institution in Mauritius which offered an excellent Foundation Course which leads to a B Com. I therefore enrolled on the course (Fast Track), aged 15, and I obtained excellent results.
With my two A-Levels in Mathematics and Accounts, as well as the Foundation course, I then enrolled on the B Com at CTI when I was 16.
Talk a bit on your experience at CTI on the degree course.
I thoroughly enjoyed my student experience. I believe the Institute offers good value for money. Why? Because my elder sister did a similar course at Monash University and spent some Rs 3 million whilst I paid only Rs 400,000! The well-structured and delivered course from Curtin enabled me to concurrently do the UNISA B Sc through the distance education mode.
What next?
I will be proceeding to the UK to do the M Sc in Computational Finance at Essex University which will start in October 2010. Following the M Sc, I would like to obtain some international professional experience and return to Mauritius to do consulting work in the SME sector. Specifically, I am interested in building mathematical models to evaluate environmental business evolution and product development scenarios.
Why?
I come from a family with a background in business and engineering. My career choice reflects my ancestral tradition of innovation with business flair and acumen in a multi-skilled mindset.
