The attractive marquee was full of guests, ranging from high-level government officials to captains of industry. "The shareholders of the Charles Telfair Institute are also the industry leaders of the country and therefore know about the demands of the labour market," summed up Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, as he praised CTI during the Inauguration Ceremony. "Our human capital will be the only major resource to drive development," he warned, as he expressed the wish to raise our current tertiary enrolment rate of 47% to 70% by the end of this year.

The Prime Minister went on to underline the importance of offering courses that are related to future job opportunities, before congratulating CTI in helping Government implement its vision to make of Mauritius a knowledge hub.

Professor Eric Charoux, the Executive Director, attributed the realisation of this 11-year project to the intense dedication of his staff and support of CTI's shareholders. He also pointed out that we would not be here were it not for the students themselves and their parents. "I am aware that some of our parents have gone through much hardship to enrol their son or daughter at our Institute and I can assure you that we shall do our utmost to always respect and honour their trust and confidence," he pointed out.

The Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, Dr. Rajesh Jeetah, described the institution as "a centre of excellence and a beacon of teaching and research."

Following these addresses and the unveiling of the plaque, the Prime Minister and other guestswere taken on a tour of the Institute during the course of which they had the opportunity of mingling with both students and guests.
