This qualification is recognised throughout Australia under the Australian Qualifications Framework and is registered with the Mauritian Qualifications Authority.

The Diploma of Children Services is one of the qualifications required for employment as a Qualified Childcare Giver in the Children Services Industry and is recognised in Australia as meeting the Community Services (Child Care) Regulations (1988). As a graduate you will be able to provide quality care and education for children aged 0 to 12 years (and their families) within a range of children's services settings. This role includes planning, programming and providing for the intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of children aged 0 to 12 years.

Diploma of Children Services graduates occupy positions of responsibility as Qualified Childcare Givers in settings such as:

  • Long Day Child Care Centres or Crèches
  • After-School Care Centres
  • Playgroup Leaders
  • Family Day Care Scheme Coordinators
  • Pre-schools/Pre-primary Teachers
  • Play Leaders in Children's Hospitals
  • Kiddies Club Managers in Hotels/Cruiser Ships


COURSE OVERVIEW

This course aims to give you knowledge and skills to provide care to children, facilitate their leisure and play and enable them to achieve their developmental outcomes. The areas covered in this course include:

  • Child physical, emotional and psychosocial development
  • Teaching and Learning through Play and other Multi-sensory Activities
  • Health and safety and Hygiene practices in child-care settings
  • Nutrition for babies and children
  • Caring for babies and children

The course focuses on acquisition of workplace knowledge and skills and is assessed through the competency/outcome-based approach: written tests, practical demonstrations, authentic or simulated projects, portfolios, work placement, etc.

Assessment exercises are administered throughout the course. There are no examinations. The course has a workplace practice or internship component.



ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Certificate III in Children Services is a pre-requisite for the Diploma Course.

Mature age person who do not have a formal leaving certificate, could however be eligible to undertake the training programme provided that they have had some work experience in the field of children services. Applicants of such mature students are assessed on an individual basis and may require production of a workplace portfolio of skills evidence.
