PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This course offers the chance to develop skills and knowledge in two or more related fields of study at the intersection of media, information and new communications technologies. The curriculum includes contextual study of the history, theory, ethics and criticism of the various practices, institutions and discourses in media, communication and information. The course provides the foundation skills and knowledge for work in the corporate media and information field, with considerable breadth of expertise.

Areas of study available are: Internet Policy and Culture; Journalism; Marketing; Public Relations; Creative Advertising Design and Photography.



JOURNALISM

Journalism theory and practice through print and radio media, including learning the legal and ethical conditions under which journalism is practised. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) this stream provides students with the ability to communicate effectively, produce news and current affairs material for print and electronic media, and understand how contemporary news media operate. Journalism may usefully be combined with the Public Relations or Internet Design streams.



INTERNET POLICY AND CULTURE

How the Internet works, how to use it, how it might be regulated and managed. The Internet understood as a complex socio-cultural phenomenon and exploited as a virtual environment. Students learn basic web design. This stream provides students with a substantial level of skill and knowledge in understanding and managing Internet activities. The Internet Policy and Culture stream may usefully be combined with the Internet Design stream.



MARKETING

Marketing offered by the Curtin Business School introduces the key skills and knowledge needed for successful marketing. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) this stream provides students with an understanding of how marketing works, consumer behaviour and the chance to explore various specific aspects of marketing including international and Internet marketing.



PUBLIC RELATIONS

Public relations offered by the Curtin Business School, develops an understanding of the fundamentals of professional public relations practice. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) this stream provides students with skills and knowledge in the principles, techniques and specific issues of contemporary public relations. The Public Relations stream may usefully be combined with the Journalism stream.



CREATIVE ADVERTISING DESIGN

Advertising Design is offered by the Department of Design. It develops an understanding of the principles and practice of advertising design for print. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) this stream provides students with an understanding of the creative processes of advertising and the skills to complete an advertising design project. Advertising Design may usefully be combined with the Journalism, Film and Television or Internet Policy and Culture streams.



PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is offered by the Department of Design, developing an understanding of concepts and skills in still photography. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication) this stream provides students with the ability to utilise photography as an integral part of corporate communications. Photography may usefully be combined with the Journalism or Film and Television streams.
